Top 5 Things to Do in the Clare Valley

Cycle the Riesling Trail

If you are coming up to the Clare Valley and not sure what to do to fill in your time when you’re not on tour, here is a list of our top 5 favourite things to do!

1. Mintaro Maze and Martindale Hall

If you are wondering, yes we are aware this is two things, but we just had to include them both! If you’re in the mood to seriously relax, unwind and ‘Breathe It In,” the historic township of Mintaro is the place to go! Get lost in the Mintaro Maze, find your inner child and find out who is better at life-size Jenga, chess and checkers in their garden. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, you can enjoy coffee (made with locally roasted coffee beans) and cake at their cafe. Only a short drive down the road you will find yourself at Martindale Hall, where you can discover the history and embark on a self-guided tour of the mansion, and stand at the film location of the 1974 film ‘A Picnic at Hanging Rock’.

2. Bungaree Station

You can really experience life on the farm in the 1850’s with a trip to Bungaree Station. Set off on a self-guided tour of their property with an audio-post tour, taking you around the grounds to the homestead, the shearing shed and the church, just to name some. The first stop on your tour is the Station Store, where you can remark at the relics kept from over the years whilst browsing heaps of local produce including, you guessed it, wine!

3. Burra Heritage Passport

Discover the historic township of Burra with a Heritage Passport, and “unlock” it’s past with your very own key. Your first stop in Burra (after a stop to one of the cafe’s in town) should be the Burra and Goyder Visitor Information Centre, where you can pick up your map and passport for Burra’s heritage sites. With the one key, you can visit sites such as Redruth Gaol, Burra Mine Site, Unicorn Brewery Cellars and the Hampton Village, just to name some. Entrance to some museums is also included, so make sure you check those out before you head off.

4. Lake Bumbunga

If you’re looking for a very unique experience on your Clare Valley stay, be sure to check out our very own Pink Lake, Lake Bumbunga in Lochiel. An easy 40-minute drive west of Clare to the town will get you there, where you can take your shoes off and wander about the lake and feel the salt on your feet. After a few (okay a lot) of photos, make sure you visit Jitter Bean Oasis for a lunch or a coffee and then head up the hill to the look-out – you won’t believe the size of it!

5. Cycle the Riesling Trail

A trip to the Clare Valley isn’t complete without a walk or cycle along the famed Riesling Trail. The old railway line now provides a safe way to travel from Riverton to Barinia, taking in some of the most breathtaking views of the region. And if you are still wanting to sample some wines and make some purchases, then we’ve taken the hasstle out. Cycle down and be chauffered back! No need to worry about returning your bikes or collecting your wine, we will take of this all for you – so why not book a Clare Valley Riesling Trail Explorer Tour with us today!
